How to set a card-based spending limit

Set a spending limit on any Loop Card to keep expenses within budget. You can choose whether the limit resets monthly, annually, or never resets, giving you full control over how much each cardholder can spend.

Overview

Card-based spending limits help you manage budgets across teams, departments, or expense types. When a limit is set, any transaction that would exceed that amount will be automatically declined. You can customize the limit amount and how often it refreshes to match your business needs.

For example:

  • Give a monthly allowance to a marketing card.

  • Set an annual cap for event spending.

  • Apply a lifetime limit for one-time project purchases.

How to set a spending limit

  1. Go to the View Cards page

    • Log in to your Loop Dashboard and select View Cards.

    • Click on the card you’d like to set a spending limit for.

  2. Open the Spending Limits section

    • Under the card details, click Change Limits.

  3. Choose your Limit Type

    • Select how often the limit should refresh:

      • Monthly: Resets every calendar month.

      • Annual: Resets every calendar year.

      • Lifetime: Never resets (the limit stays fixed permanently).

  4. Enter the limit amount

    • Specify the maximum amount this card can spend within the chosen time frame.

  5. Click Update

    • Once saved, the spending limit takes effect immediately.

  6. Review your limits

    • You can see the total limit, amount spent, and the next reset date under the Spending Limits section.

    • Example: This card is limited to $1,000 per month, resetting automatically at the start of each new month.

Notes

  • Only Admins, Card owners and Bookkeepers can set or adjust spending limits.

  • Limits apply to all transactions made with that specific card.

  • When a card reaches its limit, new transactions will automatically be declined until the limit resets.

  • You can edit or remove limits anytime from the Spending Limits section.
