Overview
Loop supports non-profit organizations that are officially recognized as registered charities in Canada. This status is granted by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) under the Income Tax Act, and it comes with specific obligations and benefits — including the ability to issue donation receipts and receive certain tax exemptions.
If your organization is a non-profit but hasn’t been registered as a charity with the CRA, it isn’t eligible for a Loop Account at this time.
What It Means to Be a Registered Charity in Canada
A registered charity in Canada is an organization that:
Operates exclusively for charitable purposes — such as relieving poverty, advancing education, promoting religion, or benefiting the community in another recognized charitable way.
Is approved and registered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) under the Income Tax Act.
Receives a charitable registration number (beginning with “BN”) issued by the CRA.
Can issue official donation receipts for income tax purposes.
Is publicly accountable for its use of funds and must file an annual information return (Form T3010) with the CRA.
Non-profit organizations that are not registered charities can still operate legally, but they don’t receive the same tax privileges or CRA registration benefits.
Eligibility with Loop
Loop can open Accounts only for non-profit organizations that are registered charities in good standing with the CRA.
Organizations that are non-profits but not CRA-registered charities are not eligible for Loop Accounts.
